Step by step

How to Find a Font From an Image

Spotted a font on a poster, a logo, a menu or a social media post and want to know what the font is called? A font finder by image answers that in under a minute. Here is how to upload an image and get your match.

Take a clear picture

Grab a screenshot or snap a photo straight on. Sharp, flat text gives the font finder the best chance.

Upload the image

Drop it into the upload box above, tap to choose it or paste it from your clipboard. The font finder with image support works with PNG, JPG and WEBP files.

Check the text

The tool reads the letters for you. If a letter is wrong, fix it in the text box so the comparison is fair.

Pick your match

Compare the closest fonts side by side, then open your favorite on Google Fonts to download it for free.

Behind the tool

How This Font Identifier Works

Most font identifier tools send your picture to a server. This free font identifier does the work on your own phone or computer instead, so finding the font in an image takes three stages.

1. Reading the letters

An open source text reader called Tesseract scans the image and finds the lines of text and their position.

2. Measuring the shape

The chosen line is turned into a clean black and white outline, so color, background and size no longer matter.

3. Comparing fonts

The same words are drawn in more than 80 popular fonts, regular and bold, and each one is scored on how closely its letter shapes, width and stroke weight line up with yours.

Every font we compare against is free on Google Fonts. If the font in your picture is a paid or custom design, you still get the closest free lookalike, which is often all you need for a school project, a thumbnail or a social post.

Tips for Better Font Matches

Any font finder is only as good as the picture you give it. When the font in an image is clear and flat, the matches get much closer. These habits make a real difference.

Works best with

  • One line of text at a time
  • Dark letters on a light background, or the reverse
  • Letters at least 30 pixels tall
  • Straight, flat text with no tilt
  • A mix of letters such as a, g, R and Q, which differ most between fonts

Gets harder with

  • Blurry or tiny screenshots
  • Text on busy photos or patterns
  • Curved, warped or 3D text
  • Heavy shadows, outlines or glow effects
  • Hand lettering and custom logos, which are not fonts at all

Identify a Font From Text You Copied

Fancy text in a bio or a caption, such as ๐“—๐“ฎ๐“ต๐“ต๐“ธ or ๐•ณ๐–Š๐–‘๐–‘๐–”, is not a font at all. It is a set of special letters from the Unicode standard. That is why a normal font identifier cannot name it, and why the text tab above can.

Paste the text and the tool tells you the exact style name, such as Bold Script, Fraktur or Double Struck, shows what share of the letters use each style and gives you the plain text version to copy. It also links to the matching generator, for example the cursive font generator or the gothic font generator, so you can write your own words in the same style.

Quick picks

Fonts That Look Like Handwriting, a Typewriter or Disney

Sometimes you are not hunting one exact font, just a look. These free picks are all part of the font style finder above, so you can test them against your own image.

Looks like handwriting

Caveat, Indie Flower and Shadows Into Light feel casual and hand drawn. Dancing Script and Sacramento lean more elegant.

Looks like a typewriter

The classic typewriter font is called Courier. Courier Prime and Special Elite give you that look for free, and Special Elite even adds worn ink.

Disney style

The Disney logo is a custom script, so there is no official Disney font to download. Fans use lookalikes such as Waltograph for personal projects.

Gothic and old style

UnifrakturMaguntia and Pirata One recreate blackletter. For copy and paste letters in this style, use the gothic font generator.

Canva Font Finder and Adobe Font Finder Options

Finding a font in Canva

Canva has no built in font identifier. If the design is yours, click the text and the font name appears in the top toolbar. If it is someone else's design, take a screenshot, upload the image here and then search the matched name in Canva's font menu, since Canva includes many Google Fonts.

Adobe's font finder

Photoshop has a Match Font feature under the Type menu that compares selected text with fonts installed on your computer and Adobe Fonts. It needs Photoshop. This page is a free font finder you can use on any phone or laptop without an account.

FAQ

Font Finder Questions

How do I find a font from an image?
Upload a clear screenshot or photo to the font finder above. It reads the text, compares it with more than 80 popular fonts and lists the closest matches with a match score. Fix any misread letters in the text box for better results.
Is this font identifier free?
Yes. The font identifier is free with no sign up and no upload limit, and every font it suggests is free on Google Fonts.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is processed inside your browser. The only things downloaded are the text reader and the font files used for the comparison.
Why does it not find my exact font?
There are hundreds of thousands of fonts, and many are paid or custom made. This tool checks popular free fonts and shows the closest lookalikes. Logos and hand lettering are often drawn by hand, so no font will match them exactly.
What font is this fancy text?
Fancy copy and paste text is made of special Unicode letters, not a font file. Paste it into the text tab and the tool names the style, such as Bold Script or Fraktur, and gives you the plain text back.
Can I find a font on my phone?
Yes. Take a screenshot on your iPhone or Android, open this page in your browser, tap the upload box and choose the screenshot. Everything works without an app.
Which images give the best results?
A single line of sharp, flat text on a plain background works best. Crop out other text by dragging a box around the line you care about.
Can it find Arial or Times New Roman?
Yes, indirectly. It compares against Arimo, Tinos and Cousine, which share the letter widths of Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New, and labels them as lookalikes in the results.
What is my font on my phone?
iPhones use SF Pro, Apple's San Francisco font. Most Android phones use Roboto, while Samsung phones use their own One UI Sans. To check a font inside an app or a picture, take a screenshot and upload it to the font finder.
Can I use this as a free font finder in Canva?
Yes. Screenshot the Canva design, upload the image here and search the matched font name in Canva's font list. Many Google Fonts are already available in Canva.
Is this like What the Font?
It does the same job of telling you what the font in an image is, but it runs in your browser, needs no account and suggests only free fonts you can download right away.
