Choose How Your Small Caps Look

Most small caps generators turn every letter small. Real typesetting does not work like that, so here you get three modes. Keep your capitals tall like a printed book, capitalise each word, or go fully small. Then copy plain text for apps or a CSS snippet for your website.

Keep capitals is how real small caps work in books: letters you type as capitals stay tall, and the rest turn into small capitals.

The basics

What Are Small Caps?

Small caps are capital letters drawn at roughly the height of a lowercase letter. So instead of SHOUTING IN BIG CAPITALS, your words look like ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ: the shape of a capital, the size of a small letter. That is also why people search for them as small capital letters or capital letters in small size.

Book designers have used them for ages in headings, acronyms and the first few words of a chapter, because they look calm and organised. Online, a small caps font has become a favourite for Instagram usernames, Discord nicknames and gaming tags. It looks neat and a little elegant without screaming at anyone.

One thing to know: this small caps generator does not actually change your font. It swaps each letter for a matching Unicode character, which is why the result is real text you can copy and paste almost anywhere.

Side by side

Small Caps vs All Caps vs Lowercase

These three get mixed up all the time. Here is the difference in one look.

All caps
SMALL CAPS

Full size capitals. Loud, good for warnings.

Small caps
ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ

Capital shapes at lowercase height. Clean and quiet.

Lowercase
small caps

Ordinary small letters. Casual and friendly.

Want to go from all caps to small caps? Paste your CAPITAL text into the generator above. It handles capitals and lowercase the same way, so ALL CAPS turns straight into ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ.

Good to know

Real Small Caps vs Fake Small Caps

Word processors and design apps do small caps in two ways, and you can usually tell them apart. A real small caps font has its own specially drawn small capitals, with strokes just as thick as the full capitals. When an app fakes it, it simply shrinks normal capitals, so the lines come out thin, pale and a bit wobbly next to the rest of the text.

Real small caps

  • Drawn by the type designer
  • Same stroke weight as capitals
  • Found in fonts with SC in the name, like Alegreya SC or Playfair Display SC

Fake small caps

  • Regular capitals scaled down
  • Thinner, lighter strokes
  • What most apps do when a font has no small caps of its own

Unicode small caps, the kind this tool makes, are a third option. They are separate characters, so they look the same in every app that supports them, with no font settings needed.

Microsoft Word

How to Do Small Caps in Word

Small caps come built into Microsoft Word, so for documents you can skip the generator. Here is how to apply small caps in Word:

  1. Highlight the text you want to change.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+K on Windows or Cmd+Shift+K on a Mac.
  3. Prefer menus? Press Ctrl+D to open the Font dialog and tick Small caps.
  4. To switch small caps off in Word, select the text and press the same shortcut again.

Word keeps any letter you typed as a capital at full height and shrinks the rest, which is the classic book look. If everything turns small, check that Caps Lock was off when you typed.

Google Docs

How to Do Small Caps in Google Docs

Google Docs is a little trickier, because there is no small caps button anywhere in the menus. You still have three easy ways to get small caps in Google Docs:

Paste Unicode

Make your text in the generator above and paste it in. Fastest option, and it stays in place when you share the doc.

Use an SC font

Open the font list, choose More fonts and search for SC. Fonts like Alegreya SC and Playfair Display SC have small capitals built in.

Fake it by hand

Type in capitals, then make the letters after the first one a couple of sizes smaller. Fine for a short heading.

Where it works

Where Small Caps Text Works

Unicode small caps paste into nearly every app with a text box: Instagram bios and display names, TikTok, Discord names and messages, Facebook, X, WhatsApp and many games. The only gaps are the two missing letters, q and x, which stay lowercase. Most readers never even notice.

Works well

  • Instagram name and bio
  • Discord nickname and About Me
  • TikTok bio and captions
  • Game names that allow symbols

Use with care

  • @usernames, which only allow normal letters
  • Passwords and email addresses
  • Anything that must be searchable
  • Text that screen readers need to read aloud

Looking for even tinier letters? Try superscript and subscript in the small text generator. For a full styled name, mix small caps with symbols in the aesthetic font generator, or browse every style in the main font generator.

A small caps generator turns normal text into small capital letters, like ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ. It swaps each letter for a matching Unicode character, so you can copy and paste the result into bios, names, captions and chats.
Small caps are capital letters drawn at about the height of a lowercase letter. They have the shape of capitals but the size of small letters, which makes text look neat and calm instead of loud.
Type your text in the box at the top of this page, then tap copy on any small caps font. The letters are Unicode characters, so they keep their look when you paste them into Instagram, TikTok, Discord, Facebook, X or a game.
Select the text and press Ctrl+Shift+K on Windows or Cmd+Shift+K on a Mac. You can also press Ctrl+D to open the Font dialog and tick Small caps. Press the same shortcut again to turn it off.
Google Docs has no small caps button. Paste Unicode small caps from this page, choose a font with SC in its name from More fonts, such as Alegreya SC, or type in capitals and make the extra letters a smaller size.
All caps uses full size capital letters, LIKE THIS. Small caps uses capital shapes at lowercase height, ʟɪᴋᴇ ᴛʜɪꜱ. All caps feels loud, while small caps looks clean and quiet.
Unicode has no widely supported small capital for q or x, so the generator keeps them as normal lowercase letters. They sit at the same height as the other small caps, so the difference is easy to miss.
Yes. Small caps work in your Instagram display name, bio, captions, comments and Story text. Your @username cannot use them, because usernames only allow letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
Add font-variant: small-caps; to the text you want to change. Use font-variant-caps: all-small-caps; if you want capital letters to turn small as well.
Paste the small caps text into the converter at the bottom of this page. It changes every small capital back into a normal letter you can copy.
