How to Strikethrough in Google Docs
Google Docs has strikethrough built in, so you do not need the generator for documents. There are three quick ways to cross out text in Google Docs.
Keyboard shortcut
Select the words and press Alt+Shift+5 on Windows or a Chromebook, or Cmd+Shift+X on a Mac.
Format menu
Select the text, open Format, choose Text, then Strikethrough.
Remove it
Select the crossed out text and press the same shortcut again, or use Format, Text, Strikethrough to switch it off.
The same shortcut works in Google Sheets and Google Slides. In the Google Docs app on a phone, select the text, tap the A format icon and turn on strikethrough.
How to Strikethrough in Excel
- Select the cell, or double click it and select only some of the text.
- Press Ctrl+5 on Windows or Cmd+Shift+X on a Mac.
- Prefer menus? Press Ctrl+1, open the Font tab and tick Strikethrough.
- To remove strikethrough in Excel, select the cells and press Ctrl+5 again.
Crossing out finished tasks in a to do list is the most common use. Conditional formatting can do it automatically, for example when a Done column says Yes.
How to Strikethrough Text in Discord
Discord uses markdown, so the strikethrough command is two tildes on each side of the words: ~~this is crossed out~~. Send the message and Discord draws the line for you. It also works with other formatting, like ~~**bold and crossed out**~~.
Markdown only works in messages. For a crossed out display name, server nickname or About Me, copy Unicode strikethrough text from the generator at the top of this page, or try more styles in the Discord font generator.
Strikethrough on WhatsApp, Word and Social Media
Type ~text~ with one tilde on each side. You can also select the text, tap More and choose Strikethrough.
Microsoft Word
Click the abc button on the Home tab. On a Mac press Cmd+Shift+X. Word for Windows has no single key shortcut, so use Ctrl+D, then Alt+K.
Instagram and Facebook
There is no strikethrough button, so copy crossed out text from this page into your bio, caption or comment.
TikTok and X
